In early November of last year, I was fortunate to receive an invitation from my university to attend a Q&A session with David Bishop, the Lighting Director, and his team at BBC Studio in Elstree. This experience provided us with an in-depth look at the intricacies of lighting production behind the scenes. Stepping into the BBC Studios, the air was charged with excitement, and I couldn't contain my anticipation as I prepared to delve into the inner workings of Strictly Come Dancing. While many fans are enchanted by the glittering costumes, mesmerising routines, and infectious energy of the contestants, I was eager to shine a spotlight on a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of the show – its breathtaking lighting design. I remained astonished by the sheer number of lights meticulously installed in the studio. When all the lights were illuminated, it created an immersive environment that captivated me.
The level of effort required for this live show is immense. It all begins on a Wednesday when the team gathers to meet the participants and review their choreography. Time is incredibly tight, participants only have two opportunities to practice in the studio. Meanwhile, the lighting team must work tirelessly to design a lighting setup that complements the mood and theme of each choreographer's vision, as depicted in their mood boards. With less than 30 minutes to spare, the lighting director must swiftly craft lighting movements and synchronise cues with the dancers' performances .
The final practice takes place on Friday, providing the couple with the chance to rehearse their ultimate dance, while allowing the production team to make any last-minute adjustments. From seasoned lighting designers to skilled technicians, each member played a vital role in bringing the magic of Strictly to life. What struck me immediately was the sense of camaraderie and passion that permeated the space, a testament to their dedication to perfection.
Next, we ventured into the technical realm, where rows of consoles and state-of-the-art equipment lined the room. Here, the magic truly unfolds as lighting cues are meticulously programmed and executed with precision. David demonstrated how each light fixture could be manipulated to create a myriad of effects, from soft hues to dynamic patterns, all synced seamlessly with the music and choreography.
The lighting department may not take center stage, but its impact is undeniable, elevating the show to new heights of visual splendor. From the subtle glow of a spotlight to the dazzling spectacle of a grand finale, their artistry leaves an indelible impression on viewers around the world.
